This section goes the different terms of keyword research.
- PBNs (Private Blog Networks): A network of websites created solely to build links to a specific site and influence its SEO. The main site that gets the link is called a "money website". These networks are typically made up of expired domains that still hold some domain authority. PBNs are considered a "black hat" SEO tactic and are highly risky. Google penalizes websites that are found to be part of a PBN, as it goes against their guidelines.
- Web 2.0: Websites that emphasize user-generated content, usability, and interoperability. These include social media sites, blogging sites, and video sharing sites. With regards to SEO, Web 2.0 often refers to sites where you can create your own page with a unique URL. Examples include Tumblr, WordPress.com, Blogger, and others. Creating Web 2.0 pages for the purpose of building links is considered "gray hat" SEO. It is technically against most Web 2.0 platforms' guidelines, but it's not as likely to result in a penalty from Google as other gray hat or black hat techniques like PBNs.
- Directory Links: Links from online directories. Some directories can be helpful, such as those for specific industries or cities, but many of them offer little value and can even harm your rankings. Submitting your site to relevant, trusted directories is considered "white hat," but overuse or submission to low-quality directories can move into "gray hat" or even "black hat" territory.
- Custom Outreach/Link Outreach: This is the process of reaching out to other website owners, bloggers, or influencers in your industry or niche to promote something that you've done and ask for a link back to your site. Custom outreach is a widely-approved (white hat) SEO strategy that builds relationships and drives referral traffic, brand awareness, and Google rankings.

- PR Links (Public Relations Links): PR links are earned when you get a mention from a journalist or a high-authority blog in your industry. This often happens due to a newsworthy event, a unique piece of content, or a well-positioned press release. PR link-building is a white hat strategy with potential for high reward, but PR successes can often be difficult and time-consuming to arrange.
- Guest Posting/Guest Blogging: This involves writing and publishing an article on someone else's website or blog to establish authority, gain exposure, and build backlinks. It's generally a white hat strategy, but it can lean towards grey hat if the primary motive is just to gain a backlink rather than provide quality content and value to the reader.
- Content Syndication: This is when web-based content is re-published by a third-party website. Any kind of digital content can be syndicated, including blog posts, articles, infographics, videos and more. Generally speaking, content syndication is a white hat strategy as long as the content being syndicated is original, useful and adds value, and as long as the syndicating website links back to the original content.
